Ningwasum ᤏᤡᤱᤘᤠᤛᤢᤶ which roughly translates to ‘memory’ in Yakthung language, is a Yakthung science fiction video work that imagines a future from an Indigenous perspective where Indigenous Nations have agency, sovereignty and advanced technology. The story follows two time-travellers, Miksam and Mingsoma, who travel from a future Indigenous Yakthung Nation to our current timeline.
Ningwasum draws from Adivasi Futurism, a critical framework that Limbu has been developing inspired by Afrofuturism and Indigenous Futurism. Weaving Indigenous folk stories and culture, the work explores the interconnections of climate change and Indigenous struggles within our current and future timelines. The work is spoken and narrated entirely in Yakthung language.
Ningwasum was filmed across Sharwa (Sherpa) Nation, Yakthung (Limbu) Nation and Newa (Kathmandu) Nation.
